Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And old lang syne?
For old lang syne, my dear,
For old lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For old lang syne.

The New Year's Party was a success. For once both hubby and I were off work at the same time and we went to a local party given up the road that we've been invited to. The place was packed with people, over half of which we did not know. Usually we are both the shy sort and rarely mingle much. We get stressed out at these sorts of parties, do not blend in well, and go home as soon as possible without seeming too rude. Maybe it was the booze flowing freely that made me relax. I drank several glasses of wine over a six hour period and hubby had sprite to drink, because he was the designated driver of course, and later on we both had coffee before leaving. Maybe we just decided enough with the wallflowers. Whatever the reason, we both had a good time and spoke to several people we did not know and with whom we immediately hit it off.
One thing I learned was that not everyone is as I think they are. For example, one couple we did know was at the party, Marty and Sam, and we had quite a good conversation about what Obama might be able to do for the country. I always thought this couple were log cabin republicans but turns out I was wrong about that. They confided that they had voted for Clinton (their first foray into the political world it turns out although they are in their early 50s) and had voted for Obama just recently. But this was confided very quietly as they sure didn't want the majority of republicans there to know their true political affiliation. Guess it was a good thing that I had never gotten around to asking them why they were republicans in the first place.
Anyway, we left as the poker games got started in earnest. Some were trying to get us to play, no doubt thinking they could make a bundle off of us. Yeah, I want to start off the new year losing money to some sharks, right...But we had a lot of fun and I am glad we went.
Another GOP sex scandal!

Recently, Dcup deposited a book of poetry in the reading room. A book I got years ago when I worked for a book jobber. The other day, I found the poem you referenced and did not realize that it was written by Burns. It is possible to learn something new everyday.
And I didn't understand what the words really meant as it didn't make sense to me so I googled it and tada--it now makes sense!
I too did not "get" what it meant. But even the translation to "old long since", is just as confusing is it not?
Sounds like you had a nice time and a worthwhile ringing in of the new year. It also sounds like you have a positive attitude toward the upcoming year, and so do I. Enough of the gloom and doom, things are going to get better!
I'm glad you got out and mixed! Sometimes we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zones, don't we?
(MathMan is going to laugh when he reads this because I was whining about going to something with him tomorrow night.)
Happy New Year to you and your hubby! And the cats.
Dave: I think it is translated to "old long ago", a poem about friendship and remembrance.
Sherry: I want things to get better and I think Obama will start working in that direction. I just hope it's enough to make a difference and that it's not too late. Yeah, again with the doom and gloom ;)
Dcup: somehow I can't imagine you being a loner. You just seem so much like a people person. I mean, look at how many people read and follow your blog! I think I would be overwhelmed by that but you seem to handle it just fine.
A belated happy new years to you liberality.
